◇◆福を呼び込む日／A day to bring good fortune◆◇
今日は節分。節分は年に4回あり、季節の分かれ目、立春、立夏、立秋、立冬の前日のことを指します。昔は立春が一年の始まりに相当する特に重要視された日だったため、今では立春前日を節分と呼ぶ習慣ができました。
　
節分の行事はいくつかありますが、恵方巻を食べることもその一つ。恵方とはその年の歳徳神がいる方向のことで、その方角を向き願い事をしながら福が途切れぬよう包丁で切らず丸ごと食べると良いとされています。運が逃げてしまうので、食べ終わるまでしゃべらないようにしましょう。今年の恵方は東北東です。
　
お写真は「ホテル日航プリンセス京都」の「フレンチシェフの恵方巻」。昨今では伝統的な具材を用いたものだけでなく、様々な恵方巻が登場しています。いつもは召し上がらない方も、今年はお好みの恵方巻を探してみてはいかがでしょうか。

Today is Setsubun (lit. “seasonal division”), which used to fall four times a year on the days before Risshun (the beginning of spring), Rikka (the beginning of summer), Risshu (the beginning of autumn) and Ritto (the beginning of winter). In the past, Risshun was considered the beginning of the year and a particularly important day, which is why Setsubun became especially earmarked for it.
　
The various Setsubun events that people engage in include eating Ehomaki (thick sushi roll). It is considered good luck to eat the whole roll without cutting it, and people make a wish facing the direction of the Toshitoku-jin god (who controls happiness for the year) while eating it. It is customary to refrain from speaking until you finish eating, as the luck may otherwise escape.
