◇◆大倉家ゆかりの建築美、蔵春閣／A Masterpiece of Okura Heritage◆◇　

新発田市出身で大倉財閥の創始者・大倉喜八郎が、昭和45年に東京・向島の隅田川沿いに建てた別邸「蔵春閣」。
現在は新潟県新発田市に寄贈され、喜八郎ゆかりの東公園内に移築・公開されています。

蔵春閣は、かつて渋沢栄一や井上馨などそうそうたる人物が訪れた迎賓館。
和の外観に、洋風の調度を設えた和洋折衷の木造建築で、当時最先端の建築物だった「明治宮殿」（現：皇居）の影響を受けた貴重な建物です。

大理石のモザイク画で彩られた2階廊下の床や、四角形と八角形を組み合わせた蜀江（しょっこう）組折上げ格天井など、絢爛豪華でクラシカルな趣が訪れる人を魅了します。

The historic Zoushunkaku villa was originally built in 1970 along the Sumida River in Tokyo for Kihachiro Okura – founder of the Okura financial conglomerate. The property was later donated to the city of Shibata in Niigata Prefecture (Okura’s hometown), relocated to the city’s Higashi Park – a site that Okura had also donated to the city – and opened to the public.

The villa served as a guesthouse and has accommodated a number of notable historical figures, including business magnate Eiichi Shibusawa and statesman Kaoru Inoue. Constructed in wood, its fusion of Japanese exterior design and more Western-style interior decor makes it a must-see, with echoes of Meiji Palace (today’s Imperial Palace) putting it at the forefront of architecture from the period.

The building’s captivating classical splendor is exemplified by the marble mosaic floors in the second-floor corridor and the Shokko-style coffered ceilings, combining square and octagonal patterns in an intricate relief design.
